Recently, Dateline did a special on air duct cleaning scams. In that episode these $49 specials scams where at best a bait and switch sale technique to worse, the upsell of unnecessary cleaning and products that left a homeowner in worse IAQ health then they started.
This happens here in our beautiful city of Huntersville and Lake Norman. Some companies may find a problem and do the proper work to remediate the issue but will not be anywhere close to their advertised price. These low ball prices are all going to be bait and switch techniques because proper air duct cleaning takes 3-4 hours. What they do for $99 is clean the area you see and be out in 1hour. But they will find something to use a fogging treatment. This treatment wont take more than 5 min but they will charge $100's. Not all Sanitizors are EPA approved and you can not use a fog treatment in insulated ductwork. 50% of duct work is insulated on the inside and this fogging treatment could cause more mold growth than when they started.
So just beware, if it is too good to be true, than it is. Use the website www.NADCA.com to find an approved and certified duct cleaner in your area.
